Guidance on adding people

Who can be added to your housing application

When you apply for housing, you must tell us who lives with you. This helps us understand your needs. Please read this guide carefully before using the ‘Add Person’ button.

People you should add

You should add immediate family who need to be rehoused with you, like:

  • your partner or spouse
  • your children, including:
  • children under 18 living with you
  • children over 18 who do not live with a partner or have their own children
  • children who do not already have their own housing application
  • children under a Special Guardianship Order
    • a court order
anyone you must live with because of serious reasons, like:

If you live in shared housing or a hostel, also add:

  • people you share a room with that you also have a joint tenancy with (you both signed the rental agreement), if they are not your partner or children

If you are not the tenant of the room or property you live in, add everyone you live with.

If you give or receive care

If you need to be rehoused with someone who is not considered your immediate family because you give or receive care, please add them to your application and answer the relevant medical questions so a medical assessment can be completed.

We may ask a health professional for advice before deciding if they need to be rehoused with you on medical grounds.

Shared custody of children

If you share custody of your children with someone else, we will check:

  • who gets child benefit and child tax credits
  • where the children’s main place of residence is.

Only the main care provider can include the children in their application.
